EXPLORE

INCLUSIVE ART

"Inclusive Arts is creative collaborations between marginalised and non-marginalised artists."

MARGINALISED GROUP

"The definition of marginalisation is the process of making a group of people less important. For example when one class of people is grouped together"

RAISING AWARENESS THROUGH ART AND DESIGN

Artivisim

So what is Artivism? In short it's a collective that aims to respond to local and global injustices using creative expression.

It can be used against any political or social injustice in a way that allows for raw emotional and multilayered understanding of the issue.

These types of expressions are shown through different kinds of mediums bringing spoken word into art.

Art has been a tool used to fight injustices for a long time, and can be seen on many different levels of art, ranging from local artists to much larger scale artists who aim to make a global impact.

Collaborations

In the past I have been fortunate enough to collaborate with other artist as well as charity organisations.

One in particular is a charity called The country that shook.

"Menstruation is a taboo subject in Nepal and in much of the world. Times are changing and the need to provide our young people with empowerment through education is becoming clearer and clearer."

"We are part of the menstrual education movement in Nepal, raising awareness and sharing fundamental knowledge to inspire independence and autonomy, changing the experience for people who menstruate, especially in rural areas"

Working in collaboration with Sophie Malaphant, who is one of the main charity organisers, felt like an incredible privilege as she had a deep insight into what these girls and women were going through. It was her passion and drive to make a difference to their lives that inspired a lot of my design work.

The inspiration behind the LOGO and UTERUS MANDALA design was the beauty and power of the Uterus and Menstruation

Final design for the logo

Amongst other things they run Menstruation (Another word for menstruation is “period”) work shops in rural areas. The aim of these work shops is to bring in a sense of community by educating, providing resources and inspiring women and girls to consider their relationship with menstruation.

Menstruation is a taboo subject in much of the world, but thankfully there is a global shift happening and they are helping to bring this movement to Nepal by raising awareness and sharing fundamental knowledge, providing understanding and dignity to help change the perception and change the experience for women and girls

MENSTRUATION COLLECTION

STATEMENT PRINTS

The Starting point of my Designs

The design process begins with the inspiration I find in the Beauty, Power and Vulnerability of Nature’s Delicate Balance. This is coupled together with the Compassion and Courage so many show in the Constant Battle to Break through the Social Taboos and Injustice Barriers people face both in our own communities and around the world on a Daily Basis.

These are the main driving forces behind every design I create, along with a passion for producing detailed illustrations that are visually eye catching, vibrant and bold.

Cosmic Cycle Collection

As part of the Beautiful Uterus campaign, I designed the ‘Cosmic Cycle’ collection.

It celebrates the cycles of our moon and the Mighty Female Menstrual Cycle. Bringing a Cosmic Combination of the Powerful and Beautiful Flow of Nature with bold prints and Statement Texts

INCLUSIVE ART

WHAT IS INCLUSIVE ART?

Inclusive Arts is creative collaborations between marginalised and non-marginalised artists.

It supports the development of knowledge and skills, so that collaborations can result in high quality art work and creative experiences.

The collaborative processes of Inclusive Arts support a mutually beneficial two-way creative exchange that enables the artists to learn and unlearn from each other.

This places the non-marginalised artists in the more radical role of collaborator and shifts away from the traditional notion of ‘worthy helper’.

Through re-defining this role and shedding the idea of the ‘expert’ artist, we make room for everyone and acknowledge the valuable and skilful contribution that marginalised communities can bring to the arts.

Inclusive Arts Research

The transformative potential of Inclusive Arts

Research has shown that collaborations with people who have complex communication needs can actually enhance creativity. This is due to the Practitioners having to think of things such as new tempos to work in, different creative spaces to practice in, new creative ways of facilitating non verbal dialogue and new media to enhance creative expression.

MARGINALISED GROUPS

What is a Marginalised community?

Marginalisation (also sometimes called social exclusion) refers to a community or group that experience exclusion and discrimination (social, political and economic) due to lack of access to rights, resources and opportunities because of the unequal power relationships that are within our societies.

The definition of marginalisation is basically the process of making a group of people less important. For example when one class of people is grouped together

Inspiring new insights is one of the main drives behind my practice as well as raising awareness of the possibilities that we as people can achieve when barriers are torn down and opportunities for expression are given to those who currently reside in the many marginalised groups created by our society.

Looking at the different Models of Disability

MEDICAL MODEL

Pointing to the ‘PROBLEM’ being the disabled person

SOCIAL MODEL

Pointing to the ‘PROBLEM’ being the disabling world

Someone born with a learning disability may experience the feeling of being devalued, due to a low expectation of achievement and fewer opportunities given for development which could lead to emphasis on negative aspects, and also focus on their 'difference’  from a young age, which I believe can be detrimental to them both on a social and emotional level.

NEGATIVE PATTERN OF DEVELOPMENT_edited_edited.jpg

This is the kind of inequality that as an Inclusive practitioner I strive to over come by collaborating with artists with learning disabilities in a way that provides equality and inclusiveness to all who participate.

With this in mind the Affirmation model of disability which takes the Social model up a level, is certainly another driving force behind my practice...

POSITIVE PATTERN OF DEVELOPMENT_edited.jpg

...this is because it

‘Encompasses positive social Identities, both individual and collective, for people with disabilities grounded in the benefits of lifestyles and life experience of being impaired and disabled’
